The past few years have seen a boost in casual gaming, with more and more people drawn to the gaming community. This boost has also benefited indie games developers, who can now market their products to a much wider audience base. Innovation-focused video game developer Team17 hardly needs any introduction. The UK-based developer has had a series of successful games over the years, and 2019 promises to be just as exciting, with several new releases lined up.
From 1991’s Full Contact to Massively Popular Worms
Team17 and its incredible lineup of games is not your average company. Its history traces back to the 1990s and it is the result of an ingenious combination between a British publisher and a Swedish developer studio. After the release of their first game, beat ‘em up gem Full Contact in 1991, the company went on to release several best-sellers designed especially for the Commodore Amiga computer. After their second game, Alien Breed, which saw players fight for survival against aliens in a tense and hostile space station, also received critical acclaim, the company knew they were on to something great. They quickly became known for their fast-paced action and stunning visuals that were ahead of their time.
But none of their previous work so far compared to their biggest hit to date: Worms. In 1995, the same year that Alien Breed was revamped in 3D, the company released the famous turn-based artillery game that showcased a war between worms. Worms quickly became a massive hit and inspired many spin-offs, from Team17’s own Worms Crazy Golf to fangames like the Worms Breakout crossover and the Worms-themed online slot game offered by Buzz Bingo. The title is seen as iconic among gamers, especially for its signature weapons like exploding sheep, the Holy Hand Grenade (also featured in Spielberg’s recent hit film Ready Player One), the Banana Bomb, and a priceless Ming Vase.
Sci-Fi FPS Genesis Alpha One and Life Sim My Time at Portia Premiere in 2019
The developer’s story does not end with Worms: after a series of successful games, it will head into 2019 with plenty of exciting new titles lined up. Genesis Alpha One will be released through the Epic Games Store across PC, Xbox One and PS4 in late January. Revisiting the FPS genre, the game takes it up a notch by introducing
Already in early access in PC and coming on consoles later in spring, My Time at Portia takes on a very different genre, as the player is called to discover the idyllic and enchanted town of Portia in this life simulation game. Inspired by the work of Studio Ghibli, Portia is full of magic and mystery – and has already gathered many fans on Steam. 2019 will also see several updates in Overcooked! 2, the 2018 sequel to the company’s co-op cooking simulation game. With dynamic kitchens that can fly and a new range of chefs, Overcooked! 2 is already a fan favorite.
Team17 is also working on a multiplayer WWII FPS, Hell Let Loose, which boasts historically accurate settings – but more details on that to come. One thing is certain: it will be a busy year for the gaming company!
