French police sources have confirmed a police operation is underway in Dunkirk following reports of the woman making the threat after storming a hospital.
Local newspaper La Voix du Nord reported on its website that a woman had threatened to detonate a bomb Dunkirk Hospital Centre.
The surrounding area has been total sealed off as military police and bomb squad officers deal with the incident.
Photos posted on the newspaper’s Twitter feed showed police vehicles sealing off the area – and intial reports suggested there may be hostages.
Initial reports suggested there may be hostages, but these later were confirmed as being incorrect.
“Source says the woman has known psychological problems”
Police said in a statement that the woman made the threat after entering the hospital’s emergency care unit.
Hospital workers alerted the police, who sealed off the area and deployed a bomb-disposal team.
“The person is under police control,” the statement said.
Sources said the woman was likely suffering from psychological problems.
France remains on high alert following a wave of terror attacks – but sources have claimed the incident is not terror related.
CNN reporter Saskya Vandoorne wrote: “Police source tells me the woman threatening to use explosives is NOT terror related. Source says the woman has known psychological problems.
“No hostages. Woman claims she has explosives in her suitcase, so a bomb squad has been dispatched.”
Police said a judicial investigation would have to determine the circumstances surrounding the threat.
