Meantime, here are a few details on Gregorius’ injury and some data on 20 candidates who will be available to fill the void.
There are three internal candidates – second baseman Gleyber Torres, Ronald Torreyes and Tyler Wade – plus 17 soon-to-be free agents.
“Internally, clearly Torres is by far the best player in consideration that we have,” Cashman said. “He can play short. He can play second. So we’ll see. We’re going to wait on him and how we handle aspect is obviously we’re in a research situation right now.”
If Torres moves to short for the start of next season – that’s how the Yanks’ filled Gregorius’ short absence in September – then Torreyes and Wade would he candidates to fill in at second base.
As for the free agent pool, many are shortstops while others are second basemen who could handle the position while Torres is manning short.
