The New England Patriots are never a finished product. Last year alone, they added Kenny Britt and James Harrison for a Super Bowl run in the middle of December. Michael Floyd joined the team that late in 2016. The Patriots are never fully satisfied with their roster. If there is a chance to meaningfully improve at any point in the year, New England will explore it.
And the Patriots need to improve more than they usually do at this point. Most Patriots teams enter training camp without any significant weaknesses. Last year’s team looked set to challenge for an undefeated record. But this year, the Patriots still have holes at wide receiver and all over the defense. A multitude of players are working to return from injuries suffered last year and their effectiveness can’t be relied upon. In the simplest terms, this is still a team that could use raw talent.
So it works in their favor that this is perhaps the deepest crop of remaining free agents in the history of July. There are usually a few fringe rotational pieces available before camp. This year, there are bonafide starters at almost every position. And one of them has already been connected to the Patriots.
