This Week in Politics – Sep. 30, 2018

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – A new FBI investigation into the allegations made by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh is scheduled to last about a week, which means it should wrap up sometime around Thursday or Friday — depending on what it turns up.

There are plenty of fora in the Bay Area this week to inform voters about candidates or issues they’ll see on ballots in November.

A forum on Monday will explain a ballot initiative for Clearwater voters that would reconstruct the city government from a mayor and city council structure to a strong-mayor format, where the mayor would retain “almost total administrative authority and political independence,” according to the Pinellas County League of Women Voters, a co-sponsor of the event with Clearwater Neighborhoods Coalition. Neither group has taken a position on the issue.

The forum begins at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 1st, at the Clearwater Downtown Library at 100 N. Osceola Avenue.

Hillsborough Schools Superintendent Jeff Eakins will hold several fora this week on the half-penny sales tax referendum.
•    Monday, October 1, 7 p.m. at Wharton High School, 20150 Bruce B. Downs Blvd., Tampa
•    Wednesday, October 3, 7 p.m. at Westchase Recreation Center, 9791 Westchase Dr., Tampa
•    Thursday, October 4, 7 p.m. at Pizzo K-6 School, 11701 USF Bull Run Dr., Tampa
•    Saturday, October 6, 11 a.m. at HCC at The Regent Satellite Campus, 6437 Watson Road, Riverview

Hillsborough and Pinellas counties will start mailing domestic absentee ballots by mail this Tuesday. Anyone can request a mail ballot, but you have to do so by 5 pm on October 31.

Voters in Riverview can meet many of their local candidates in a forum on Tuesday night at 6 at The Regent. Confirmed attendees include Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister and his challenger Gary Pruitt; both candidates for Florida House district 57, Debbie Katt (D) and Michael Beltran (R); and many others.

Tampa Republican Women Federated will host a luncheon for Casey DeSantis, the wife of Republican candidate for governor Ron DeSantis, on Wednesday at Center Club on S. Westshore from 11:00 am to 1:30 pm.

Empowering Wellness will host a medical marijuana conference on Saturday afternoon at the Hilton St. Pete Carillon Park. Several politicians will be in attendance, including congressmen Charlie Crist and Darren Soto, and state senator Jeff Brandes.

Watch Politics On Your Side with host Evan Donovan every Sunday morning at 9:30 on WFLA News Channel 8, right before Meet the Press.
