The Hunger Games alum Amandla Stenberg has made it a professional mission to have her movies teach audiences to ‘love black people as much as they love black culture.’

The 19-year-old LA native portrays 16-year-old prep school student Starr Carter in the critically-acclaimed police shooting drama The Hate U Give, which has earned a modest $2.5M at the box office.

The biracial beauty said in Glamour‘s November issue: ‘If we’ve done the job right, movies like The Hate U Give will be a tool in depicting that sort of cultural appropriation, why it’s insensitive, why it’s not cool.’

George Tillman Jr.’s film – which finally hits UK theaters October 22 – is based on Angie Thomas’ 2017 novel and it also stars Regina Hall, Issa Rae, Common, and Anthony Mackie.

The Hate U Give’s screenwriter Audrey Wells tragically died, age 58, the day before the October 5 US release following a five-year battle with cancer.

And Amandla – who relies on stylist Karla Welch – said of her red carpet fashion: ‘It is just an inherent part of my job. It’s something that I love. I want to express myself as authentically as I can.’
