NORTH CALDWELL, NJ — A resolution requesting funding from Essex County for the design and construction of a turf field at the Borough of North Caldwell’s Mountain Avenue Field was adopted during Tuesday’s borough council meeting, where the mayor and council also unanimously supported a proclamation condemning “all efforts to delegitimize the State of Israel and the global movement to boycott, divest from, and sanction its government and people.”

A number of Jewish community leaders attended Tuesday’s meeting in support of this proclamation, which specifically states that the Global Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions Movement (BDS) is a “campaign seeking to exclude the Israeli people from the economic, cultural and academic life of humanity.”

Those who spoke praised the Borough of North Caldwell for initiating this resolution on its own. Speakers in favor of the resolution and of its intention to support free expression and human rights for all people in Israel, North Caldwell, across the United States and around the world included:

  • Gail Block, regional vice president of Hadassah
  • Stephanie Bonder, immediate past president of Hadassah
  • Rabbi Alan Silverstein, religious leader of Congregation Agudath Israel of Caldwell
  • Michael Cohen, Eastern director of the Simon Wiesenthal Center
