month of culture

Whether you are Manx as the hills, or have chosen to live here, being Manx and part of our Island means something to us all.

Our culture is a way of expressing our identity, of who we are as a nation, but it’s never set in stone.

Whether you’re interested in music, language, calendar customs or motorsports, there’s always something new to try, and July is the perfect month to take up the challenge.

Year of Our Island and Culture Vannin have teamed up to highlight activities and events within the community which support and promote Manx culture. Look out for our culture booklet to give you some ideas.

The celebrations for the month have begun with the launch of the ’Isle of Man Cultural Engagement Survey’ which asks all Island residents for their opinions on the arts, recreation and Manx culture, with views helping to shape the development of our Island’s arts and culture scene.

To complete the survey go to

Tynwald Day, the Celtic Gathering, the Isle of Man Flower Festival and Ramsey National Week are some of the key events taking place this month.

There are many more, from Junior Tynwald to tin whistle workshops, from a vintage mobile cinema bus to a series of Manx walks and talks.

All of the Island’s schoolchildren can say moghrey mie (good morning) and fastyr mie (good afternoon), so how about trying it out yourself this month?

Why not visit one of the churches in the Flower Festival, enjoy a concert, or come and sample the delights of the Tynwald Fair.

A special family activity designed for the month is a short but challenging treasure hunt around the St Johns area, a fun activity that young and old alike can take part in, with small prizes available at Culture Vannin cultural centre for completed forms.

Information and treasure hunt forms available to download from and can be picked up at the welcome centre and Culture Vannin.

There are many ways to get involved in events new and old, to celebrate our wonderful and unique culture.
