Man drowns at Sulphur Point in Bay of Plenty

A man has drowned in Tauranga today after he fell off a boat.

Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Turner of Tauranga Police said members of the public found a yacht with no one on board and a body was found in the water soon after.

“The Coastguard arrived soon after they were notified and pulled the man from the water but he was not able to be revived.”

Turner said the man was not wearing a lifejacket and alcohol was not a factor.

He said Police were still in the process of notifying the man’s family and enquiries were being made outside of the Bay of Plenty.

Turner said the man had been onboard a boat by himself and his death would be referred to the coroner.

Police were seen onboard a Coastguard vessel inside a restricted area. Tied to the Coastguard vessel was a white 8.8 m sailboat.

The body was removed from the area just before 5pm.
