Wellingtonians have had a sharp – but short – interruption to their Boxing Day festivities with a magnitude 3.8 earthquake.
The earthquake hit just after 7.15pm.
The epicentre was 10 kilometres southwest of Wellington, at a depth of 25 kilometres.
It was felt mostly in Wellington, Upper and Lower Hutt, Kapiti Coast and the top of the South Island around Picton.
However, there were reports of weak shaking in the Far North and as far south as Dunedin.
GeoNet recorded more than 4000 ‘felt’ reports.
