Kress Cinema managers in downtown Greeley looking to add a second screen in 2019

The managers of the Kress Cinema & Lounge hope to bring downtown Greeley a second movie screen within the next year.

Kress manager Margaret Thompson said she and Justin Ghofrani have wanted to expand to a second screen since 2014, when they took over managing the Kress, 817 8th Ave. With studios’ requirement that theaters show only one film on a screen in a given time period, Thompson and Ghofrani knew an added screen would mean a great opportunity to reach more audiences.

“A second screen is something that we’ve wanted for a long time,” Thompson said. “As soon as the space became available, we kind of jumped on the opportunity.”

The Kress plans to place the screen where Grabo’s Bar & Grill was located, 805 9th St. The bar had its last night at the end of September, when the entity owning the property, GTC Investments, didn’t give Grabo’s owner Ryan Gentry the option to renew his lease on the space. Thompson said they hope to fit 50 seats in the space.

The second screen won’t be Thompson and Ghofrani’s first project expanding the Kress, having opened a nameless speakeasy-style bar at the beginning of this year. Though details like an opening date, capacity and the costs are still up in the air as they work to secure funding,

“We’re very much in the early stages,” said Thompson. “But we’re definitely very excited and ready for people to know a second screen is coming, hopefully in 2019.”
