August 12 is celebrated as International Youth Day by the United Nations. It was declared as such to create awareness about cultural and legal issues surrounding today’s youth. This year the theme is- ‘Safe Spaces for Youth’. August 12 was celebrated as International Youth Day for the first time in 2000. This Initiative was taken up by the UN to draw attention towards youth development and protection and problem areas for youth such as education, environment, employment, girls and young women, HIV/AIDS as well as inter-generational relations. On this day the youth is encouraged to share opinions and participate over virtual free spaces and help accommodate vulnerable and marginalised youths across the world.
