“I want art lovers to become car lovers,” says Professor Paolo Tumminelli, the founding chairman of the Grand Basel advisory board, which is developing an automotive exhibition that will debut in Basel, Switzerland on September 6, and then open in Miami on February 22 before moving to Hong Kong in May 2019.

“Grand Basel is an opportunity to start not just a discourse about the cars, but about everything that goes with cars,” says Tumminelli, a professor at Cologne University of Applied Sciences. “The automobile has influenced design, architecture and the arts, equally inspiring music, fashion and literature. Our advisory board gathers personalities with very different backgrounds and whose diverse points of view ensure a new approach towards the automobile.” Considering Grand Basel takes place mid-winter in Miami, it should draw automotive and industrial designers eager to escape the cold and have their souls refreshed. Grand Basel will be a perfect place for industrial designers and art collectors to mingle for two days.

To curate the first Grand Basel exhibit, Tumminelli turned to Lapo Elkann, who founded Italia Independent, communications agency Independent Ideas, and Garage Italia in Milan, a melting pot of Italian style, design, culture and cuisine. His brother, John, currently heads Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, and Exor, the investment company of the Agnelli-Elkann family that controls Ferrari and Juventus F.C. among other ventures.

“Grand Basel excites me – intellectually and emotionally – as it connects two of my greatest passions, automotive and design,” Elkann says. “I do not believe that anybody has produced a show like this before, joining both fields in a beautiful landscape of ideas.”

Artist Sylvie Fleury joins Elkann and Tumminelli on the advisory board. Fleury has partnered with several brands on art projects, often including the automobile. American cars are one of her passions, and they feature regularly in her automotive-themed work.

This trio will curate the 200 cars of Grand Basel. Watch the videos posted here to better understand the ambitions of the Grand Basel exhibition.
