The union said Hoyts workers had been told they must accept an offer that puts them on the minimum wage – which is $16.50 an hour.

The union hoped that handing out the popcorn would highlight the low wages for workers, compared to a $19.00 film ticket.

Unite Union said its members had been told that even a one minute strike would result in a month-long lockout.

Popcorn will be handed out at Hoyts cinemas in Auckland, Hamilton, and Christchurch this afternoon.
