(KUTV)- The former Richmond mayor, Marvin A. Traveller, passed away after he was struck by a car Thursday morning.

According to Utah Highway Patrol, Traveller 89-years-old, was “distracted” by his dog he was walking when he stepped into oncoming traffic, not realizing how close the approaching car was.

Traveller was walking west toward 400 west on the south side of SR-142 near the edge of the roadway when a 2011 Gold Chevy Cruze, driven by a 24-year-old male, approached the intersection of 400 West and SR-142.

The driver told police he saw a dog running in the roadway and a male walking west on the south side of SR-142 near the edge of the roadway. “When the driver saw the dog run into the roadway then back toward the south side of the roadway the driver started to move left of center and when the dog was in the roadway and then back toward the right when the dog appeared to be out of the road,” the driver told police.

The dog was not injured and was not on a leash, police said.

Travellers was transported to Logan Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
