Fallen antenna blamed for Smithsburg Auto Parts fire

SMITHSBURG — A fallen radio antenna is being blamed for the fire that damaged a Smithsburg business Sunday.

In a news release Monday morning, the state fire marshal’s office reported that the “antenna fell on electric power lines that became energized causing the fire” at Smithsburg Auto Parts, 5 W. Water St.

The blaze was reported by a neighbor at 11:02 a.m., according to the release. Damage was estimated at $50,000 to the building and $50,000 to the contents.

About 50 firefighters were sent to the store, and it took about 50 minutes to bring the fire under control, the fire marshal reported.

Water Street was closed for hours because of the blaze.
