Ex-banker jailed 14 years over N20m fraud


An Edo State High Court sitting in Benin City on Tuesday sentenced one Mrs. Gloria Ogbeide to 14 years imprisonment for defrauding a couple, Mr. and Mrs Mikano Kadiri, of N20 million.

In a suit No B/CD/32C/2016, the convict who was a staff of an old generation bank in Benin City was arraigned on a two-count charge of fraud.

She was docked under section 1(1)(c) of Advanced Free Fraud and other related offences of the law of the federation

The convict, who was an accounting officer to Mr. Kadiri, a former Special Adviser to ex- Governor Adams Oshiomhole, was first arrested in January 2016.

She was accused of luring her victims to open a fixed deposit account of N15m and purportedly deceived the couple when she presented a birthday cake baked with the logo of the bank as gift from the bank.

The convict told them they would enjoy some profit on a monthly basis as the money could not be withdrawn.

Trouble started when Kadiri requested to have access to the money but was told that the money had been lent to the banks co-operative.

The couple later discovered that the bank does not operate co-operative system and the said money could not be traced.

Ogbeide wrote a letter of resignation to the bank which was revealed to the victims and she was arrested on the account of her resignation.

Delivering the judgment, Justice Efe Ikpomwonba found the accused guilty on the charges and sentenced her to 14 years imprisonment.

The sentence will run concurrently for seven years without an option of fine.
