Downriver Arts and Crafts Guild gives scholarships to aspiring art students

The Downriver Arts and Crafts Guild awarded four $500 scholarships to local students as part of its last meeting of the season in June.

Scholarship Chair, Theresa Moore, redesigned the application process for today’s students. All of the award recipients were honor students looking forward to pursuing careers in the visual arts. Scholarships are donated by artists who wish to help a High School Senior pursuing a degree in the Arts. DACG has honored Helen Miyagawa by naming a scholarship in her name for her continued generous support of the Scholarship Fund.

The winners were:

• Joshua Tufts of Flat Rock, and graduate of Gabriel Richard Riverview, will be continuing his education at Columbia College in Chicago. Joshua is already an award winning photographer, leads photo-walks, and has started his own photography company called Joshua Tufts Photography & Design.

• Maria Robinson, graduating from Carlson High School, was a Congressional Art Show participate in 2018. She will be heading off to Henry Ford College this fall majoring in visual, performing and media arts. Her ultimate goal is to complete her education at the Savannah College of Art and Design and work in animation.

• Rachel Mulraney, from Southgate Anderson, will be headed off to Penn State this fall. She started a charity to fund a universally accessible playground in her community in memory of her sister, Megan Rose. Rachel will be pursuing a degree in Art Therapy. Her scholarship is named in honor of Helen Miyagawa, long time member of the DACG, for her continuing support of the scholarship program.
