The Buffalo Bills found their head coach and general manager in the Carolina Panthers organization in 2017. One year later, the Panthers appear to be looking in the Bills organization for a new GM.
Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network reported that Lake Dawson, the Bills’ Assistant Director of College Scouting, is a candidate for Carolina’s general manager job.
When the #Panthers begin GM interviews this week (as @AdamSchefter said), sources tell @RapSheet and me the list will include interim GM Marty Hurney, #Texans exec Jimmy Raye III and #Bills exec Lake Dawson. They’re also expected to reach out to the #Titans‘ Ryan Cowden.

Dawson joined the Bills in May of 2017. Brandon Beane had nothing but positive things to say about Dawson and the experience that he brought to the Bills.
“Lake has worked hard,” Beane said. “He’s had a heck of a career. He rose to a level of VP of Player Personnel. He’s interviewed for multiple GM positions. To have a guy with his experience and leadership and high character … we talked about that in the interview. What type of player are we looking for … Lake understands that it is the guy on the field, but as the Assistant College Director, we’re going to make sure our college scouts are working the background and the character on prospects.”
Dawson joined the Bills after a stint as the Cleveland Browns’ National Scout. Before his brief stint in Cleveland, Dawson spent eight seasons with the Tennessee Titans. Dawson first served as the Titans Director of Pro Personnel. He was later promoted to Vice President of Football Operations and eventually took the title of Vice President of Player Personnel.
This will not be Dawson’s first general manager interview with the Panthers. He previously interviewed for the job in 2013. In addition to interviewing with the Panthers, Dawson has previously interviewed for GM jobs with the Dolphins (2014), Buccaneers (2014) and Bears (2015).
