Those of us who have travelled in a plane or on long journeys in a car know the struggle of keeping your skin hydrated and blemish-free – and that’s just when we go on a quick two week holiday.

But when travelling is your job it becomes even more difficult to create a beauty routine that will be effective in different climates and countries.

Marie Fe and Elise Cook are two women living the ‘dream life’ – travelling constantly and sharing envy-inducing photos on social media – but they’ve worked hard to make sure their skincare works as hard as they do.

The German-born beauty has been country hopping with her fiancé Jake Snow, who is Australian, for three years. They share their incredible journey on Instagram.

‘From the moment I met Jake on a beach in Thailand almost three years ago I have been on the road ever since, never stopping for more than three months at a time,’ she explained.

‘We have visited 30 countries together in almost the same amount of months, travelling on buses, planes, tuk-tuks and ferries. We’ve slept in airports, tents, hostels, campervans, villas and under the stars. With all of the crazy twists and turns this lifestyle throws at me, it is my skin that tells me if I’m looking after myself properly or not.’

‘For two years now I have been following a whole plant-based diet. This is the absolute main reason I am able to stay in shape, look vibrate and keep my skin clear while travelling,’ she said.

‘A whole plant-based diet is rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants which are all vital in keeping our skin healthy and glowing. I try to eat as much fruit as possible concentrating on getting enough berries in each day.

Marie Fe’s top five skincare tips for travel

1. Try as best as you can to get a good night sleep, this means turning off all devices one hour before going to bed. The artificial light is really disruptive to your sleep pattern.

2. Don’t eat the airport food, most airport food is processed and full of sugar. Try to bring some fruits, nuts and seeds to snack on. If you can’t bring anything a 10-20 hour water fast is a great way to let your stomach cleanse itself.

3. Use tea tree oil on those little pimples that do find their way through.

4. Drink water!

5. If you’re having trouble with your skin, try reducing your gluten intake and see if it helps.

‘On the days where I notice my skin isn’t quite as clear and bright as usual, I can almost guarantee that I haven’t drank enough water. This is my biggest weakness and something I need to try to remember more every day. So drink more water, five big cups a day is what I aim for.’

While she doesn’t over-complicate her skincare routine, there are a few products she swears by – particularly when, after coming off birth control, she found her hormones were ‘all over the place’.

‘Just quickly before I get into which products I use, I want to share an awesome tip that I’ve learnt just recently. I found an app called “codecheck” which I use to scan the barcodes of all the skin care products I buy. This app will tell you exactly what ingredients are in the products and whether or not they are harmful to your health and skin. In my opinion the products that are the most natural are always the best,’ she said.

‘I really love the brand HelloBody, all their products are completely natural and there brand has a great environmentally conscious ethos. I use these products daily for photo shoots and to keep my skin looking healthy and hydrated through all the flights, airports and travel in general.’

She’ll use the Coco Fresh Face Cleansing Foam morning and night to cleanse her skin, the Coco Daily Face Lotion in the morning before putting on her makeup, the Coco Soft Detox Night Lotion after she cleans her face before bed and the Coco Body Butter when she gets out of a shower.

‘For a long while, Dom and I have been very conscious of what we are putting into our bodies. It started for us when Dom discovered he was intolerant to wheat, with particularly bad reactions to highly processed wheat,’ she said.

‘That led us down a path of learning so much about what we are putting into our bodies, and about why organic produce really is worth investing into.’

Driving around Australia in their VW Kombi named Scout, the couple now swear by brands like Remedy Skin, Meeamo, Edible Beauty and Akhal to clean and wash their face.

Elise uses makeup products from Inika and Eye of Horus if she’s wanting to dress up, as well as sunscreen every day.

Just like Marie, Elise also believes in the power of Vitamin D and – while she’s cautious of the sun – argues that we need to maintain a healthy relationship with being outdoors as well.

Elise Cook’s top four skincare tips for travel

1. Drink lots of pure and filtered water. You’ve heard it before, here’s another reminder.

2. Get your pre and probiotics. I love incorporating probiotics like live fermented kimchi and sauerkraut (love Kehoes Kitchen), Coconut Yogurt (we love COYO as it’s lowest in sugar), or Kombucha (we always try and find Remedy Kombucha as it has almost no sugar – so many brands add sugar back in so be cautious).

3. Try to add collagen into your diet. Collagen is what our skin, nails and hair needs to remain youthful, strong and glowing. It is missing from most modern diets, but an easy way to add it in is with some collegen powder that you add to your water, smoothie or coffee, or consuming bone broth regularly.

4. Choose organic, in season produce whenever possible. What we get from the vegetables we eat, the nutrients and the vitamins, is completely dependent on the soil it has grown in. You want to know that the soil is rich and thriving, and that no nasties or pesticides have been sprayed onto what your eating or the soil it has grown in.
