KARACHI: At least three people have been injured when the police baton-charged residents of Orangi Town and family members of a six-year-old girl, who was allegedly raped and killed, who had taken to the streets on Tuesday to protest near Karachi’s Katti Pahari area.
The injuries resulted after the protesters clashed with the police. The three injrued have been shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medical attention. The police have also contacted the Rangers for back up. The police baton-charged the protesters in an attempt to stop the protest.
During the protest by minor girl’s family members, one policeman was injured due to the stoned hurled by protesters, while two are injured by police’s aerial firing.
Minor girl’s family blocked the road leading to Kati Pahari for traffic while protesting for the arrest of the culprits. Heavy contingent of police reached Kati Pahari to negotiate with the protesters. However upon hurling of stones, police opened aerial fire and baton charge on the protesters.
According to Karachi police spokesperson, the minor’s body was recovered from bushes near the Northern Bypass within the jurisdiction of the Manghopir police late on Monday evening.
Station House Officer (SHO) Haji Sanaullah confirmed that the victim’s body bore torture marks and had been shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for an autopsy.
The residents resorted to protesting against the crime after the police allegedly failed to act promptly on the matter and not alerting the family members.
The doctors’ initial examination suggests that the minor was subjected to rape before being killed. Samples collected have been sent for chemical examination. Further investigation is underway, officials confirmed.
Vehicular traffic had been suspended due to the protest while the traffic police provided alternative routes to ease the commuters, they confirmed.
The minor had disappeared on April 15, and was a resident of Baloch Para, Orangi Town.
The family had previously filed a report of their missing daughter, however, when the police recovered the body, they did not alert the family for recognition.
