New Century Academy in Hutchinson was awarded an Arts in Schools Grant of $2,798. The money is for bringing in Demo Inc. artist Monica Villars to work with students on western paper making and book arts. Through this project, students will create their own paper and a variety of books in different styles and express themselves through creation, color and storytelling.
The applicant said that students “will be shown that arts are more accessible than they sometimes realized and they can utilize recycled paper and other materials to build books and create other tangible art pieces.” Participants will have the opportunity to showcase their books at the Goodness Coffee House in Willmar at the end of the academic year.
The students will also teach a simplified version of what they learned for an early childhood art project with the Social Emotional Enrichment and Development Program for children age 3 to 5 in Willmar. For more information, call Jason Becker, NCA director, at 320-234-3660.
The Southwest Minnesota Arts Council awarded an Established Career Artist Grant of $7,000 to Andrew Nordin of New London. He works as an art instructor and gallery manager at the Hutchinson and Willmar campuses of Ridgewater College. The money will be used to create a series that he plans to exhibit in April 2020 at the Lord Grizzly Gallery in Luverne, Minnesota.
Nordin said he will focus on three-dimensional artworks that use the “floor space of the gallery instead of just walls.”
“I envision the main artworks will function like Japanese screens,” he said, “dividing the space and allowing views from both sides.”
The studio work for this project will consist of small studies, medium-scaled freestanding paintings, and one or two large-sized constructed painting installations. Funding will go toward art materials, tools, heating for his studio, travel and artist’s time. For more information about the artist, visit andrewnordin.info.
