Recent findings suggest that the Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton has always possessed a particular fondness for refined men. According to Marie Claire, when Kate Middleton was a young girl, she had a big crush on Andrew de Perlaky.
Andrew de Perlaky now goes by the name Andrew Alexander. If this name sounds familiar, it’s because Alexander is now an accomplished television, stage, and film actor known widely for starring as Sir John Bullock in Downton Abbey.
Years ago, Kate Middleton and Andrew Alexander starred together in a production of My Fair Lady. Though the future actor and Duchess were only in fourth grade, Katie Nicholl said Kate Middleton “quietly” fell for Alexander in her novel Kate: The Future Queen.
The star-crossed fourth graders just weren’t meant to be
In her novel, Nicholl states:
“Andrew played the role of Freddie, who falls for Eliza, but she rebuffs him. There was a twist of irony to the tale, for in real life, Kate had quietly fallen for Andrew, the blond-haired, blue-eyed chorister with the voice of an angel. He was the best-looking boy in her year, and Kate had gotten to know him well as they were both in the school choir, but sadly for her, Andrew was already ‘dating’ her friend Fiona Beacroft.”
Despite Kate Middleton’s fondness for the aspiring performer, the man was already smitten with Kate’s friend. And Kate, being the mature and sophisticated lady we know her to be, allowed the lovebirds to live happily ever after (for however long that is at 11 years old).
Andrew Alexander knew that Kate liked him way back when
Andrew Alexander, when confronted years later about Kate’s crush, revealed that he was aware of her feelings; however, reported that she was too shy to ever come forward. He stated:
“It was funny because it was passed on to me, as happens at school, that Catherine liked me. She never told me that herself, she didn’t have the confidence. One of her friends, Fiona Beacroft, was my girlfriend at the time. She was more of a chatterbox and a bubblier character, but these were very innocent relationships, and very fleeting—sometimes they lasted a matter of days.”
While likely only dating Ms. Beacroft for a matter of days, Andrew Alexander and Kate Middleton never found a way to each other. Kate, even back then, was definitely following the girl code.
According to Alexander, Kate – a shy and reserved girl – also never went off with the other kids when they went to play Spin the Bottle in the woods. Alexander told Marie Claire, Cate “was never a part of that.”
Kate Middleton and Andrew Alexander: An innocent childhood crush
While you may have been hoping for a juicier story and a tale of young love between Alexander and Middleton, it appears that the two never got a chance to test the waters.
The fourth-grade love scene was just a bit too chaotic for Kate Middleton. And who can blame her, from spin the bottle and pretend marriages to theatrical performances involving complete dedication to the art, these two were never destined for a future together.
Andrew Alexander is now married to the artist Araxie Kutchukian, and they live together in West London, where Andrew Alexander often performs (he is known widely in the London theatre circle).
