It’s not just Santa Claus headed to Newton. So are 45 new jobs. Biewer Lumber announced plans to expand the two-year-old sawmill.

The $40 million corporate investment in new equipment and the existing facility will increase production by 50 percent. Newton residents say the expansion is exactly what the city needs.

“We’ve been looking for industrial growth for a long time and the saw mill has brought a lot of exciting opportunities for a lot of different people,” said Tim Croff.

“I think it’s wonderful. We need some type of expansion here in Newton anyway. We need to get jobs for the people. I think it’ll be a wonderful thing,” said Eugene Brown.

The Mississippi Development Authority and the city of Newton are assisting with the expansion project.

Newscenter 11 reached out to Biewer Lumber, but they were not available on Wednesday.
